Atomic Knowledge #24: Threshold & Distinguishing Competencies
Why being good enough isn’t good enough
⏱️ Reading Time ≈ 1 min
Threshold competencies are the foundational abilities required for anyone to hold a particular role. They include baseline knowledge, qualifications, and cognitive skills—essentially the “price of admission.” By contrast, distinguishing competencies set top performers apart. While everyone meets the threshold to enter a position, only those who master higher-level competencies—such as advanced emotional intelligence, strategic thinking, or visionary leadership—rise above the rest. This concept draws heavily on David McClelland’s work on competence, which showed that many conventional hiring filters (like IQ or basic credentials) merely ensure threshold capabilities. True stars in any field often exhibit deeper self-awareness, refined interpersonal skills, and a knack for creative problem-solving, elevating their impact well beyond the norm. Focusing on distinguishing competencies isn’t about ignoring fundamentals but about recognizing the unique qualities that consistently drive exceptional outcomes—and devoting energy to developing them.
